Dr. Matthew Weightman

Matthew is a postdoctoral researcher in Dr Melanie Fleming’s NeuroRehab Research Group and Professor Heidi Johansen-Berg's Plasticity Group. His research focuses on understanding the neural mechanisms that support motor learning, brain plasticity, and recovery following brain injury- with the aim of developing more effective rehabilitation strategies.

His current work investigates the role of sleep in recovery after stroke, examining how sleep contributes to motor memory consolidation and neural plasticity, how disrupted sleep influences functional recovery, and whether sleep-related physiological processes can be enhanced non-invasively to improve rehabilitation outcomes.

Matthew also has a broader interest in brain injury and neurotechnology. He is involved in collaborative projects developing and validating wearable EEG technologies to identify physiological markers of mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) and to monitor brain health in real-world settings.

Prior to joining Oxford, Matthew completed an MSc by Research and PhD at the University of Birmingham, where he investigated the effects of non-invasive brain stimulation on sensorimotor adaptation. His current research combines sleep neuroscience, neurotechnology, and brain stimulation to better understand, monitor, and promote recovery following neurological injury and disease.
